Request the document if the result matters
Once you identify a case, use the clerk’s records process for the docket or filing. Save the case number, county and court division rather than forwarding only a search-screen name match.
Do not use Portal as if it were the certified background-check product
Case access and a background check are not interchangeable
The Judicial Branch specifically tells people seeking a criminal background check to use the county clerk process rather than treating Portal as the background-check product. Court-record access can still help with a known case, but a Portal or terminal result should be described as court information, not as a certified county search or SBI criminal-history response.

North Carolina state-only scope
The SBI personal review is a fingerprint-based review of North Carolina criminal history. The current SBI guidance states that the state right-to-review fee is $14. It is not a nationwide check and does not replace a separate FBI Identity History Summary.
Why fingerprints change the identity question
A fingerprint submission is designed to tie the record review to the subject’s biometrics instead of relying only on a name. That makes it a different product from a clerk’s name-based county search.
Results go to the subject
SBI describes the personal review as a right-to-review process for the person whose record is being checked. That is different from an employer or agency obtaining a statutorily authorized background result.
Correct the source that actually contains the error

County court record wrong? Start with the Ashe clerk and the case record that contains the disputed filing or disposition.

SBI criminal history wrong? The SBI guidance describes a Written Exception process after the person obtains the right-to-review response.

Third-party screening report wrong? Dispute with the reporting company as well as supplying authoritative court/SBI documentation when appropriate; the government source and the consumer report are different records.
